Monday morning I was glad to find out Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is coming to the Netherlands in june. Then I got home and found out Boris Yeltsin died. Weird...

Anyways, I was in the lab where participants were performing my first experiment (exciting times) and I couldn't really focus on other work there. So I spent some time updating my showlist. Lots of cool artists in the coming months!

Oh seven is a year of highly anticipated records. Some of the best releases of 2005 have their follow up lined up this year. The New Pornographers will release their new one in august, Be Your Own Pet has started working on a new album and some albums have already been released. Do these albums live up to their high expectations? Here are my thought on some of them.

The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

The internet buzz surrounding this album was almost scary. However, the band made a great album, a little less daunting than on Funeral, but much better than what I expected.

Bright Eyes - Cassadega

Most mature Bright Eyes record to date and that's not a bad thing. There's still emotional intensity but packed in a somewhat different form and with a thicker production. Call it Americana or country or folk or something in between...I like this...a lot!

The National - Boxer

An album less rocking than their previous effort (Alligator). However, the songs on this album suits the singer's distinct voice perfectly. Special stuff!

The Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes and The National had to fight against almost unrealistic expectations. With that in mind, I have nothing but the utmost respect voor these artist for putting out yet another great album. If you haven't fallen in love with these artists yet, this is the time to jump on the wagon!

Show Review: Camera Obscura @ De Balie, April 15th

Last night's show was planned at Paradiso, but for logistical purposes was moved to the nearby "De Balie". Definitely not a bad decision, because this venue -normally used as a theatre- perfectly suited the intimacy of Camera Obscura's show.

I really didn't have any expectations from the show, but I was pretty impressed. I can't really put my finger on what it is, but there's something about this band. Sure...one could argue that nothing happens on stage. The band just stands there performing some songs. The only member who shows some energy is the multinstrumentalist who played percussion, trumpet and at times guitar. I cant disagree with that, however, I argue that this stage presence complements the bands sound and style perfectly. Singer Tracyanne Campbell is the absolute star of the band. With a voice to die for she grabs your attention, almost like putting a spell on you. She made the slower songs sound so vulnerable and delicate that there was almost complete silence in the audience. A sight not often seen or heard at a show and it was beautiful. The faster songs sounded tight and more powerful than on record. Camera Obscura is definitely a band whose live show adds elements to their records. In fact, while travelling to work this morning, I played the albums Let's Get Out Of This Country and Underachievers, Please Try Harder and it's like I appreciate the band more...I get songs I didn't use to "get". It's definitely a plus to have these positive associations from the live experience!

Conclusion: definitely a great show. Intimate, fun and dreamy. As an encore the band played a decent cover of Abba's Super Trooper. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Show Review: I'm From Barcelona @ Melkweg

Zero percent pretentiousness, one hundred percent fun. That basically sums up an I'm from Barcelona show. Yesterday was no exception, though I have to admit that I liked last year's Utrecht show a little more. For instance, their were less Swedes (but I still counted 18) on stage than at the previous show and the Amsterdam audience was a little less excited (but still way more excited that normal at a sunday show).

The band's enthusiasm again was very contagious and you rarely see this amount of equality between a band and the audience. Although their setlist showed similarities with their previous show in the Netherlands, they played some other songs as well. At first I wasn't really (or really wasn't) into their Bryan Adams cover of Can't Stop This Thing We Started, but they managed to give this song a typical I'm from Barcelona sound. Singer Emanuel started the intro of Purple Rain, but unfortunately, they didn't pursue that one...

Adventure Kid, who made a techno 8bit version of their hit song We're from Barcelona delivered the after party, with bandmembers partying and dancing along with the audience...good times!

I'm sorry for hardly putting up new blogs. File Transfer Complete has been falling victim to my new job/life, which by the way is working out quite fine! Though I could finish this blog with one final post, I have a feeling there's a future for this blog. I still have a need to inform you about my latest discoveries and with the purchase of my 80 gig I-pod (right now it contains over 2500 songs, probably one tenth of the final number :]) I at least have more time to listen to great new and not so new music.

This week I'm busy designing my first study, but I'm planning a reanimation of FTc in the coming weeks. For now I'll keep the shows section up to date.

Show Review: The Fratellis @ Melkweg

I'm under some bad spell considering shows lately. I wanted to go to the Hold Steady show feb. 10th, but it is already sold out. The same goes for The Fratellis show of last monday. My big brother thaNniSh did have tickets and was kind enough to write a short review [thanx!].

Costello Music was one of last years most enjoyable albums. Nearly six months after the release of their debut album, The Fratellis finally toured the Netherlands. Although it was in the Old Hall in the Melkweg and on a monday night, it was worth the wait! In comparision to Razorlight, this was definitely a band that seems to enjoy themselves on stage.

The first couple of songs were played very fast, which worked out well for some songs (Everybody Knows You Cried LastNight), but not for Flathead. The pa-da-da sing along felt victim to the speed - a shame! It was positive however to see the band expand their album tracks live. The crowd's reaction however was a bit tame; between songs it was almost completely silent.

Absolute highlight of the show was Chelsea Dagger. It was like everyone was waiting for this moment: the crowd went erserk..goosebumps! Surprisingly enough this was not the last song. It was followed up by Ole Black 'N' Blue Eyes after which an encore of three songs (including a semi-acoustic version of For the Girl) concluded the show.

So...my Ipod got lost in the mail and a new one should be on its way. To make my travels a little bit more pleasant this week, my brother was kind enough to lent me his (Thanx!). In the train this morning I was scrolling through his albums and I found one I hadn't played in a while: Funeral by The Arcade Fire. Their new album (Neon Bible) will come out soon (March 5th) and is probably the most anticipated album of 2007 in "indieworld", which is not surprising considering the succes of Funeral. Sinners Stick Together!

Boston based The Sterns describe their own sound as "Jangly Guitar Pop Circa 1986 with a Punk Rock Aesthetic Circa 1979". They certainly prove this on their album Sinners Stick Together, which will be released on March 13th. The album is filled with well crafted indie/powerpopsongs, not unlike early Elvis Costello (check out 'Papa, You're in your Prime') or a more rockin' version of Belle and Sebastian. There are enough other references of course, but this band has created a really fun album that is hard not to like!

When I started this blog, I'd admit at not having a life...Does that mean that when I hardly have time to post that I have a life? I'm not sure, but I am quite sure that my life is pretty hectic at the moment. I've started my job today and this weekend I've moved to my temporary home in the oldest city of the Netherlands Nijmegen. Because of this I probably won't post as regularly as I used to. I do however have the intention to keep this blog running, so don't worry..and maybe this will result in quality over quantity?

The New Pornographers is often refered to as an indiepop supergroup. This is not really surprising if you consider the other bands the members of NP play in. Take for instance the solo succes of A.C Newman and Neko Case and the critical acclaim drummer Dan Bejar gets with Destroyer. I've gotten to know (and grown to love) all these acts through NP.

Kathryn Calder (keyboard player in NP) plays in Immaculate Machine, but I did not know this when I first heard this band. What I did know is that Calder impressed me with her vocal talent at the NP's show last year. Neko Case was absent but she took her place in a wonderful way. Anyways, the first song I heard of Immaculate Machine was Phone Number and it's a winner. Thus, when I looked into this band and found out that Calder was in this band, I was pleasantly surprised.

Immaculate Machine is an indierock trio with somewhat unorthodox instrumentation. There is no bass player for instance and songwriting and vocal duties are rotated. The vocals are definitely a strength of this band and odds are that you'll like this if you dig the NP. Immaculate Machine however definitely have a sound of their own. They expect to finish recording their new record this month. Can't wait! For now, here are some older songs...

The Broken Family Band

One album I overlooked in a long list of overlooked albums in 2006 is Balls by The Broken Family Band. Imagine a countryband that likes to rock or a rockband that likes country. I'm not talking about cowpunk, though the guitars sound quite punky at times... For now, let's call it indierock with a country feel to it.

The first song (and single) on the album is 'You're like a Woman'. It's a fun song (if you're into the Fratellis, you'll like this!), which will give you an indication what this band is about. Don't let it fool you however, most songs on the album are more laid back.

One of the highlights of these laidback songs is the (call it a parody of country duets if you will) break up duet 'Alone in the Make-out Room', with lyrics like:
I wanna watch you drown in a lake or get stabbed by a bull or bit by a snake and there's not a single doctor who will come and help you
versus
I want you to move to Australia, with me a success and you facing failure and all the friends you had ignore your calls

Don't worry though...in the end everything works out...

Another FTC favorite on the album is the Leonard Cohen cover 'Diamonds in the Mine'. They've made an instant singalongable yet rocking version of this song. In case you're not familiar with the original, I've put it up as well.

The Eames Era

It's a small step from recently discussed Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer to The Eames Era. We're talking cute as hell sugarsweet indiepop here. Their new album Heroes and Sheroes is scheduled to be released somewhere in the next couple of months and is highly anticipated at FTC headquarters. Watch the video to ''A Scandal in Bohemia' and you will know why. It's been re-recorded (and renamed; it's now called 'Watson on your Side') for the new album and I'm already pretty sure this new version will end up on my 2007 yearlist of best songs. You can compare it for yourself...I've put up the the new version below as well as a couple of songs from their 2005 album Double Dutch. You can listen to more new songs on their MySpace page, but be warned..you might fall in love with this band!

New Panda Bear Song

The other day I've got an email from a promotor filled with info about the new Panda Bear album (Person Pitch), which is scheduled to be released march 22th. While some might see this as a form of unwanted spam, to me it almost made me feel like a true blogger. The best part however is that the song that accompanied the email (Comfy in Nautica) is actually very interesting. It's a beautiful a-capella song (think Beach Boys harmonies) filled with some sample and noise in the background.

For those of you unfamiliar with Panda Bear, it's the solo project of Animal Collective member Noah Lennox. According to the press release, Person Pitch "is suffused with the kind of feel good modern toe-tapping pop that seems harder and harder to find these days". While 'Comfy in Nautica' hardly fits this description, it does make me look forward to the new album.

Finally Friday Video Week 1 [2007]

Boy...do I love YouTube! While searching for Neko Case video's, I came across a -to me unknown- video of one of my favorite bands: the New Pornographers. 'Your Daddy Don't know' was recorded for the soundtrack of 2002 mockumentary film FUBAR. It's an awesome cover of Canada hardrock outfit Toronto. Now, I believe the best covers are of songs that you've almost forgotten but that sound awfully familiar when first heard. In this case, I wonder if I've even known the original at all, but indeed it sounds really familiar, almost like it reminds me of another song. Then suddenly it hit me...this really really really sounds like Jessie's Girl by Rick Springfield. YouTube wouldn't be YouTube if it didn't also contained the Toronto original and the Rick Springfield classic, which I present to you for the first installment of the Finally Friday Video series of 2007.

A band only needs one good song to draw my interest. Enter 'the Simp' by Chicago based Baby Teeth. It's an indie rock gem seemily influenced by classic rock. It was this song that made me look into this band. I've come across an advanced copy of their new album (also titled the Simp, which will be released through Lujo Records early this year) and I am somewhat surprised by it. The common denominator here is indie rock but there are obvious influences of classic rock but also 60'/70's pop. Some songs are even close to disco. I'm still not sure if I like this album, but at this moment it's safe to say I'm intrigued by it. However...this record probably will stay a hit or miss record to me. Some songs are really enjoyable (sometimes even really really good!) and some songs I won't regret skipping. Anyways, I've posted their best song (the Simp) and the song most likely to appear on your radio (Swim Team). Enjoy!

Interesting synopsis: one of the cutest powerpop bands teams up with one of the biggest skapunk bands to play their favorite 80's songs. Okay...not really original, but when Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer is involved...I'm game!

Welcome to the year Two Thousand and Seven! Sounds pretty futuristic right? So much is going to change in my life this year that I'm taking it day-to-day. However, I can already tell you that I'm looking forward to the return of two heroes from my youth:
- the sixth Rocky movie: Rocky Balboa
- the release of Chinese Democracy by Guns n' Roses (this could be the year...)

10. Frida Hyvönen - Until Death Comes

Discovered late in the year, the album from this piano playing singer songwriter became one of the most played records in the previous weeks. In a way, this can be compared to Regina Spektor but it's a little less radio friendly. Very diverse, very beautiful, pretty weird and misleading at times (what about this lyric: 'Once I was a serene teenaged child/once I felt your cock against my thigh'). This album might make you a little uncomfortable, but you will be intruiged and you might even love this!

9. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit

I still don't get why this band isn't being played on Dutch radio. Forget the Scissor Sisters with their overplayed hit single, listen to Belle and Sebastian for you indiepop intake!!! The Life Pursuit is the most accessible and extravagant B & S album to date. Camera Obscura might have the best songs, this album is better as a whole. Sing along and dance!

8. the Mint Chicks - Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!

"hardcore, punk, pop and rock are put in a blender with excellent results" is what I wrote about this band. One of the more surprising albums of the year. This record keeps sounding fresh and exciting, weird yet accessible, rocking yet cute.

7. The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine

As I wrote here, I never 'got' this band until this album and I'm still blown away by it. Postpunk did not sound better than this in 2006.

5. The Brother Kite - Waiting for the Time to Be Right

To me, one of the biggest surprises of the year. Put Nada Surf, The Cure and the Beach Boys in a blender, add a dreamy production and you get a winner. There are some extraordinary songs on this, but what makes this album even more outstanding is the completeness of it. The combination of slower and more uptempo songs keeps this album interesting. 4. Sprites - Modern Gameplay

I have a weak spot for cute indiepop songs with keyboards. This is exactly what Sprites does perfectly on Modern Gameplay. Add some lyrics about computers, zombie movie directors, blogging, dj'ing and you get one of the most played albums of 2006 at FTC headquarters.

3. Okkervil River - Overboard and Down (EP)

Can a five song tour EP (of which one is a cover and one a live song) end up this high in a yearlist? Hey! We're talking Okkervil River here! The few songs on it are of extraordinary quality. I can't wait for the new album!

2. The Walkmen - A Hundred Miles Off

The sound on this album is somewhat surprising considering their previous work, but to me it was a big improvement. They've created a style in which they sound really comfortable. What really makes this album end up this high on my list is the constant quality of the album. On most albums you'll find the urge to skip a few songs...not on this one!

Though I liked his previous album (Suicide Medicine) more, Rocky Votolato is still one of my favorite singer songwriters. What a voice!!!

16. Bruce Springsteen - We shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions

This tribute to traditional American folk -that can be interpreted as a protest against the current (political) state of the USA- will have you singing along in no time. I love how this album manages to sound honest, energetic and joyful at the same time. [video: Pay Me My Money Down]

15. The Cardinal Sin - hurry up and wait

This album has everything I look for in punkrock. Rawness, energy, melody and passion. Often compared to the Alkaline Trio, I like this more than the last Alkaline Trio album.

14. Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of This Country

Responsible for two of the finest indiepop songs of the year ('Loyd, I'm ready to be Heartbroken' and 'Let's get out of this Country') and those are not the only good songs on this album.

13. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Blood

I discovered this woman through her work in the New Pornographers. Beautiful voice, stellar lyrics...a great alt country album!

12. Johnny Cash - America V: A Hundred Highways

Cash never sounded this vulnerable, which makes this album very special. 'Like the 309' still puts a lump in my throat every listen, leaving countless goosebumps on my skin.

The 3 best shows of 2006

The Pipettes were totally fun live, the farewell show of Boy Sets Fire was suiting and intimate, the voice of Kate Jackson(the Long Blondes) blew me way, Islands and David & the Citizens were some of the pleasant surprises and singing along to Good Clean Fun was still fun in 2006, but these are the three best shows (in no particular order) I went to this year.

I'm From Barcelona @ De Helling (December 8th)
I was really anxious for this show with expectations at unreasonable heights, but I totally had a blast. Seldom did I have so much fun at a show and time never went by this fast at a show before (except for the Kiss reunion tour in '96 of course). My cheeks hurted from smiling all the time and I kept wondering why I didn't brought out more friends to this show. They would have loved it. Not a soul left the building without a smile!

Okkervil River @ Rotown (May 13th)
The combination of intimate songs, rocking songs, emotional songs together with the sheer class of the musicians made this a memorable evening. Far to few people attented this show, but I was more than impressed. I liked Okkervil River before the show, but I'd never really got them until this show. Now they're one of my all time favorites.

I will never forget the 50 or 60 year old dude in the audience who sang along to every word, giving some other old dudes faith that they would also still be cool at that age...

The New Pornographers @ De Helling (May 14th)
It's hard not to fall in love with this band. On record, this band makes the finest (power)pop songs you'll ever hear. Live, these songs sound even better. With a beautiful intro working up to an extreme climax, their version of 'The Bleeding Heart Show' was my favorite live moment of 2006. This band doesn't have a cool image or a lot of personality on stage, but they don't really need with songs that good.

This show was so awesome that it turned my show going buddies Pete Moore and Jen from skeptical yet openmindend to awestruck and fans for life.

These days I'm often scrolling through my music collection, with the main reason to find the best albums and songs of 2006. Yeah, it's yearlist time and as a first year blogger, I have not realized the complexity of this. I've given myself a deadline somewhere between Christmas and the New Year, so you might want to start working on yours. I would love reading them! Anyways, because of this time consuming activity, I probably won't be blogging that comprehensively.

Tralala

Could a bandname be any simpler than Tralala? In the case of Tralala, the music is pretty simple as well. Think Ramones, Ronettes and Beatles inspired poppunk with four female singers. They're somewhere between the dirtiness of (though not as dirty as) the Donnas and the poppiness of (though not as poppy as) the Pipettes. The vocal harmonies are the band's strength and gives them a certain retro sound. They say it best themselves: "Tralala are boys and girls who play rock songs without strings attached...and they believe it is OK to shake your hips to rock and roll." Their new album 'Is that the Tralala' was released last month.

I think I've seen the Vandals live at least 5 times and every time they finished their set with the Simpletones cover "I have a Date". Guitarist Warren took over vocal duties for that song and he went totally crazy doing it, ending up naked more often than not. Their shows were always fun (not in an explainable way, but in a 'you had to be there' kind of way), though their records kept getting worse. I've kind of lost touch with the band, but they deserve a spot in the finally friday video series.

Sometimes there is a thin line between mainstream and indie music, take Regina Spektor's single 'Fidelity' (watch video below) for example. It's a song that would not be misplaced on mainstream radio except for one thing if you listen closely: this song is really good! I love the break at 2:50 into the song. Spektor has an extraordinary voice (in a positive way) that she uses very dynamically: sometimes it's like she's whispering, sometimes she sounds very vulnerable, sometimes very strong.

Spektor's 2006 album "Begin to Hope" makes for perfect late night music. Listening to it will relax you, but has enough surprising moments to keep you awake. The Russian Born, American singer songwriter and pianist has made a very diverse album, that I'm liking more and more with every listen. It's the kind of album that unveals secrets every time you listen to it, sometimes lyrically and sometimes musically. Interesting stuff. If you like the video to 'Fidelity', she has a music player on her website. I've put up the bonustrack Uh-merica, where the uh sounds dangerously close to a vomiting noise but I'm sure that's not done on purpose hehe...

Stephen Brodsky

Lately I've taken quite a liking to the song 'Sentimental Case' from Stephen Brodsky's new album (Stephen Brodsky's Octave Museum). Stephen Brodsky is the singer of metal/indierock outfit Cave In, which I never got into, but then again this solo project, sounds really different. It's filled with laid back poprock tunes that fit in somewhere between the Beatles and the New Pornographers. Not really groundbreaking, but an enjoyable album nonetheless. Suited as background music, except for Sentimental Case, which you should play at a louder level!

Work! Work! Work!

A few weeks ago I might have mentioned something about a job interview. Well, that job interview went pretty well. In fact, last week I got offered a position as Ph. D. student at the University of Tilburg! That's right folks, I'm heading out for an adventure in the real world. My first concern is finding a place to live in Rotterdam, which is located between my home and friends and Tilburg. I'm starting January 15th, so if you have some knowledge of available livingspace, I would appreciate the heads up!

These are exciting times as you'll understand! For one of the first times in my life I know what I want to do (workwise at least). Perhaps more importantly, I finally have a good enough reason to buy an IPod. I know it's weird, but I'm not a shameless consumer, I have to be able to justify my purchases and now I can! Out with the discman and in with the IPod!!!

In changing times it's always wise to look for words of advice in your music collection. That's exactly what I did and here are some of the findings...

If this sounds familiar or if you can relate to this, let's discuss a band whose goal it is to play the themes to all the Nintendo 8 bit games before they die: The Advantage. Not only is this an awesome goal, but these self proclaimed 'serious dudes that rock with good nintentions' execute these song very well. My favorite song has to be Goonies 2. Show Review: I'm From Barcelona @ De Helling

The I'm From Barcelona show of last night was much anticipated at FTC Headquarters. Before the show I was already certain that this was going to be quite the experience...and it was.

Moss (from Amsterdam) had the pleasure of opening for these crazy Swedes and they did it well. No matter the style of music, it's always nice to see good musicians at work and that was definitely the case at hand. I expect to hear more from this solid indierock/pop band that will release their debut album through Exelsior in a few months.
The main dish: I'm from Barcelona! I was afraid that the band would show up at minimal strength, but from the number of microphones on stage it was obvious that they were with plenty: I counted 20 Swedes. They played a festival in France the night before and after a 12 hour busdrive they were anxious to play. From the Barcelona intro (Freddy Mercury style) until the last song, this band was all over the place. My expectations were high, but actually I enjoyed myself so much more than expected.

First let me try to paint a picture of the setting: a dozen instruments (ukulele, tuba, flute, xylophone, keyboards etc.), bubble blowing and so many people on stage that you don't know where to look. They seem to perform with only one goal: giving the audience as good a time as they're having themselves. Their enthusiasm is so contagious that in no time you find yourself participating with handclaps, hip shaking, headbopping, handwaving, almost dancing (I'm not a dancer) and smiling...lots of smiles. In fact...I don't believe the grin lost my face during the show, which went by much too fast (time flies when you're...exactly).
Though I wished they played more songs, I liked what they did with the ones they did play, adding elements, slowing and speeding them up and stretching them out. They added the chorus of Madonna's 'Like a Prayer' at the end of 'Rec and Play' and played a new song that was inspired by the fascinating though akward documentary Grizzly Man. After telling the audience that the bubble making machine was broken and some people started chanting "We want Bubbles", singer Emanuel Lundgren created a new song ("We want Bubbles") on the spot. Another example of his improve skills was replacing the "damn!" in the song 'Oversleeping' with the Dutch translation "verdomme".

This band should be added to your must see list. Sure, it might be a little to happy for your taste, but I guarantee that you have a great time. It was a shame that so few people decided to come to this party (I don't believe attendance reached more than a 100), but in the end everyone was standing as close to the stage as possible, smiling and dancing. Not a soul left the building dissappointed and for one evening the world seemed a happy place (Ok, I can't believe I've just said that...).

I don't know...you just had to be there I guess! By the way, I found this awesome acoustic video (thanx to LaBlogotheque) which you might like.

Show Review: The Long Blondes @ Rotown

It might have been a good idea to buy tickets in advance, because there was already a long line standing outside of Rotown when we got there. Luckily we were in time to still get in.

De Nieuwe Vrolijkheid, invited by the Long Blondes themselves had the honours to open for a sold out crowd. This young artpop band from The Hague didn't impress me. It's great that they try to be original, but last night their act lacked the personality to pull it off. Technical difficulties and weak vocals (couldn't tell whether this was the band or the sound guy) didn't help them either.

Up next: The Long Blondes. If you haven't heard their single 'Once and Never Again', you haven't been paying attention (at least not to this blog hehe). The first thing I noticed was the personality of singer and born performer Kate Jackson. She grabs your attention without asking for it and she can sing...boy can she sing!!! I can't remember when I was this awe struck by the voice of a female singer at a show. Every note was full on and with so much conviction; she truly held nothing back. The played boredom of the (female) guitarist en bassist seems to suggest: it's all about Kate, never mind us. But in this case, it's the tightness of the band that provides the opportunity to shine for Kate Jackson.

Now I have to admit that my likeness to this bands is limited to certain songs. This is the kind of band I skip certain songs of. Their set last night was enough to keep my interest, not to short and not too long. The Long Blondes are fun live!

Love is All

I'm aware that a lot of bands I've talked about in this blog are Scandinavian. I'd like to state that this is not on purpose. It's just that this region is filled with so many great bands that George W Bush would probably refer to it as the axis of evilly good music that is a threat to the US indie scene (of course if he had good musical taste, which is more than doubtful. That's a good thing though cause if he did, he might invade Scandinavia to stop this bands from being better than their American counterparts...).
Sorry for drifting off...let me introduce you to Love is All from Sweden. I highly recommend their critically acclaimed debut 'Nine Times That Same Song' if you like pop songs with a little punk chaos added to it. This is catchy but weird, danceable but rocking. I like their old school sound, which remind me of X-ray Spex at times, although the singer's voice alone might account for this. Looking forward to their Amsterdam show december 14th!

The time for end of the year lists is only a month away and I haven't even discussed two of this years finest indiepop releases. Thus, A tad (and not so fashionably) late, I present to you 'Let's Get Out of This Country' by Camera Obscura and 'The Life Pursuit' by Belle & Sebastian.

There are a lot of similarities; both bands are from Glasgow and their music is easily comparable. Camera Obscura is often described as a lesser Belle & Sebastian, but with their latest album they're truly closing the gap. I can't really say which of these two albums I like best. Both albums are full of (so many) insanely catchy pop songs, which makes me wonder why their succes is still limited to the indie scene in a lot of countries. I've put up 2 video's by each band. Earcandy anyone?

Music lists are controversial. Musical taste is subjective and putting bands in order can be tiresome and arbitrary. Influential bands should be included, but influence does not necessarily equal greatness. However, you don't have to read Nick Hornby's 'High Fidelity' (actually you do if you haven't but that's another story) to know that making and discussing lists is fun. Everyone has their own idea about them and they can lead to heated debats!

Kerrang magazine made a pretty bad list of the top 50 punk albums of all time. I copied this list from punknews. I will give you my view on this list below, so you can make your mind up first.

Seen the complete list? Ok...now let me give you a couple of reasons why this list sucks.

#1 There are two Green Day and two albums by the Offspring on it and only one Ramones album. That alone makes this list ridiculous in my opinion.

#2 There is only one Bad Religion and Descendents album on it while two Green Day and two Offspring albums made the list (as you'll notice...I'm having issues with this).

#3 No way that The Offspring's 'Smash' is better than '...and Out Came The Wolves' by Rancid or London Calling by the Clash or ... (enter 90-95% of this list)!!!!

#4 NOFX 'White Trash...' is so much better than the two albums featured on this list.

#5 Blink 182 is on this list and that's not all...they're positioned higher than Bad Religion, the Descendents and Minor Threat.

#6 Where are the following bands: X-Ray Specs, All, Screeching Weasel, Mr. T Experience, Dag Nasty, Lifetime, Husker Du, Minutemen, Lagwagon, Avail...etc.

#7 ...

I like to direct your attention to the show list on the left of your screen, because there are a couple of shows coming up that are in need of your attendance. No less than four bands I've talked about in this blog will play a show in the Netherlands in December and January. Next friday, I'm from Barcelona will play in de Helling in Utrecht. I can hear you scream from excitement already although I'm wondering if all 29 band members will be there...

January 25th, melodic hardcore outfit No Trigger will play as a support act of A Wilhelm Scream in Amsterdam. A couple of days later The Fratellis will perform at the same venue (Melkweg), followed by Ben Folds in Paradiso on January 30th.

Friday night on my bicycle, on my way home after a job interview I was rocking out to Say Anything's 2004 album 'Is a Real Boy'. This post is not about that album, but if you haven't heard it yet, you better get to it! It has been re-issued this year and on this e-card you can listen to three songs. This band shows that punkrock still can be energetic, exciting and original. Check out the video to ´Alive with the Glory Of love´, which is my favorite.

Anyways, there is this one song on it that made me wanna do this post. It's called 'Admit It' and it's a song with a narrated verse and a sung chorus. As you will notice when listening to it, it's a denounciation of the fake elititists and hipsters in the underground scene, as you´ll find out after these first lines: 'Despite your pseudo-bohemian appearance| And vaguely leftist doctrine of beliefs| You know nothing about art or sex| That you couldn’t read in any trendy New York underground fashion magazine| Prototypical non-conformist| You are a vacuous soldier of the thrift store Gestapo| You adhere to a set of standards and tastes| That appear to be determined by an unseen panel of hipster judges (bullshit)| Ouch! It got me thinking. There are other narrative songs that are really good. Actually, the three songs that first came to mind are all pretty good to awesome even. Maybe songtelling is a recipe for succes? Check out the three songs that came to my mind first below. Now, I'm curious...can you think of some other ones?

Show Review: Strike Anywhere, the Loved Ones @ Bibelot

Some observations from last night's show in Dordrecht.

* Going to shows when you're tired is a bad idea.
* Bibelot, located in an old church, is a beautiful venue.
* This was the first time I had to pass a metal detector to enter a show. Luckily I wasn't stabbed to death, like at other venues.
* Churches are made for preaching, not for rocking. Well...there was some preaching. The sound however was really bad, but that's what you can expect with that acoustic.
* Support act The Real Danger was pretty good, solid cover of the Jam's 'In The City'!
* The Loved Ones were ok. They have some really good songs, but their songs really really sound the same. Watch their video for 100k below.
* Pretty lame crowd...
* I've seen Strike Anywhere once or twice before and their show was as energetic as the previous ones. Their sociopolitical hardcorepunk is done well and they show a lot of passion, but I wasn't really feeling it.
* Going to shows when you're tired is a bad idea.
* Don't judge a venue by its appearance.
* ...
* ...
* Actually, this evening wasn't that bad...or good...average

Show Review: David and the Citizens @ Rotown

I like going to shows. Most times, these are shows of bands that I already know and like, but last night I decided to check out a band I'd only heard a couple of songs of: David and the Citizens. The songs that I had heard were ok, nothing that special actually: just plain decent indierock. Therefore I didn't have high (if any at all) expectations for this show.

We were a bit late and missed the beginning of the set, but from the first song to the last this band this band was...really good! I was somewhat surprised by it, but these four sympathetic and humble Swedes put on a great show. With conviction they brought their songs with an energy I was missing in the songs I've heard from them before. Their pop/rock songs filled with the occasional trumpet and keyboards won the crowd over easily (imagine a lot of headbopping and dancing...). The singer told how they played the streets of Rotterdam in the afternoon (awesome!), which got them some money and food. From the number of people in Rotown (much more than I'd expected) I believe that also got some people wanting to check them out.

So, if you ever get the chance to see this band...please do! You won't regret it. For now, watch the two video's below! Click here to check out more of their songs.

Way to go Dr. Frank

Remember The Mr. T Experience, one of the finest pop punk bands ever? I've lost touch with them (they still perform occasionally so I've heard), but their 90's records still get played regularly at FTC Headquarters. The band revolved around singer Frank Portman aka Dr. Frank. Let me tell you...this man is a genius in writing simple songs with beautifully funny cynical lyrics like "Nixon had his puppy, Charles Manson had his klan, but god forbid that I get a girlfriend" (from 'Even Hitler had a Girlfriend'). With Brilliant one-liners like 'The future ain't what it used to be', 'Thank you (for not being one of them)', 'Who needs happiness (I rather have you) and 'The weather is here, wish you were beautiful' he could also have pursued a career at Hallmark. Instead Dr, Frank wrote a book, named King Dork! A fresh addition to my 'to read' list...

"Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) is a typical American high school loser until he discovers the book, The Catcher in the Rye, that will change the world as he knows it. When Tom discovers his deceased father’s copy of the Salinger classic, he finds himself in the middle of several interlocking conspiracies and at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, ESP, blood, a secret code, guitars, monks, witchcraft, the Bible, girls, the Crusades, a devil head, and rock and roll. And it all looks like it’s just the tip of a very odd iceberg of clues that may very well unravel the puzzle of his father’s death and–oddly–reveal the secret to attracting semihot girls.

The book has been getting a lot of good reviews and this week I read on punknews.org that Will Ferrell and Adam McKay have grabbed the rights to the novel. It's not yet clear whether Ferrell will actually play in the movie. All I can say is: way to go Dr. Frank!

Finally Friday Video's Part X

Last week I asked you for your participation in the 'Finally Friday Video' series. Maybe it's the quality that counts and not the quantity, because I got only one recommendation. However Steve Vai's 'The Audience is Listening' is a video I've never seen before and it's a great one too. Thank you Boris Yeltsin ( :] ) for your contribution! This song reminds me a little bit of Van Halen's 'Hot For Teacher'.

Speaking of Steve Vai, I'm afraid I'm not really familiar with his work. I do know he played the guitar in David Lee Roth's solo act. Therefore, I added the video of my favorite song (Yankee Rose) of his 1986 album 'Eat 'em and smile'. In this song Steve Vai literally lets his guitar do the talking and after watching it you'll understand why Van Halen stopped being cool when David Lee Roth left the band. It just doesn't get more over the top than David Lee Roth. I'm sorry that the sound is a little off sync, but I couldn't found a better one...

The Illusionist...and other (potentially) interesting movies

Most monday evenings, you can find me at the sneak preview in Leiden. The reason I rarely talk about the movies I've seen there in this blog is because most of them aren't really worthwhile. It doesn't happen very often that you see a movie you actually like, but it's always nice to hang out with friends discussing the weekend and making up stories about the lives of other people in the cinema. After last weeks dreadful movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (I read this on the internet, which sums up the movie best: "When the Dawn of the Dead remake features a better chainsaw kill than your film with the words "chainsaw" and "massacre" in the title you know you've made a stinker") it was definitely time for something more interesting, more entertaining, thought provoking...in short: something better!

...and for once the cinema's manager Leo Lek (you gotta love his name) did not dissappoint. He played The Illusionist, a romantic drama/mystery with Edward Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti. The story's got a bit of a fairytale kind of feel to it. Though the romantic subplot is a little cheesy at times, it's a good story as a whole. It's the kind of movie that helps you escape the real world for an hour and a half. Now, when I'm watching a movie I'm not really paying attention to the acting. I mean, I notice when the acting sucks and that can be really annoying, but I rarely say that I'm blown away by an actor's performance...until I saw Giamatti's performance in this movie. Already nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Cinderella Man, he really deserves one for this one. The depth he gives his role is a pleasure to watch. For his performance only. you won't regret seeing this movie!

Speaking of movies. I came across two movies that could be really interesting, especially if you're fascinated with American culture, like me.

The first one is Jesus Camp: "directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (The Boys of Baraka), it follows Levi, Rachael, and Tory to Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire" summer camp in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, where kids as young as 6 years-old are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in "God's army." The film follows these children at camp as they hone their "prophetic gifts" and are schooled in how to "take back America for Christ." The film is a first-ever look into an intense training ground that recruits born-again Christian children to become an active part of America's political future". With a synopsis like that my interest is definitely triggered. Watch the trailer below.

The second one is Fast Food Nation. The book was on my to read list, but I never got to it. Let's see how this one turns out. Again, watch the trailer below.

"When it was published in 2001, Fast Food Nation quickly became a New York Times bestseller, with its no-holds-barred, non-fiction exploration of "the dark side of the All-American meal." The big screen version FAST FOOD NATION is a dramatic feature penned by Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser and Oscar nominee Richard Linklater, who also serves as director. Explains Linklater: "The movie is not a documentary, but a character study of the lives behind the facts and figures. I'm more interested in fiction than non-fiction. You get to the point through human storytelling."

The Brother Kite

Remember my post on what the Beach Boys would sound like in 2006? Let me introduce you to The Brother Kite. This band is creating quite the buzz in the blogworld with their new album Waiting For The Time To Be Right. That's not surprising: with a sound that's somewhere between the Cure, the Beach Boys and/or Nada Surf, their songs already sound familiar at the first play. The dreamy athmosphere makes this album a perfect soundtrack for this autumn. You might have to get used to how this album is produced, but I feel it really works out well for them.

'I'm Not the Only One' (watch video below) is the logical choice as a first single. It's one of the faster songs on the album, an uptempo rockin' song that could have been written by Nada Surf. The album as a whole- which I'm getting into more and more with every listen- is a good mix between uptempo rockers and slower dreampop. I've put up one of both.

New Johnny Cash Video

I doubt that there will be a release this year that brings out more emotion in me than Johnny Cash's 'American V: A Hundred Highways'. Featuring some of his last recordings before his death, you can notice a change in his voice. It sounds weaker, but not in a negative way and it's like he's having trouble breathing. Because of this, these songs sound so pure and so vulnerable that goosebumps take over my skin and a lump settles itself in my throat. This is not an album I play often, but it gets me everytime.

The first video from the album has just been released and it features no less than 36 cameos, including Iggy Pop, Bono, Jay Z, Keith Richards and Johnny Depp. I'm surprised to find out that one of the creators of this video is...Justin Timberlake (the others being Rick Rubin, Tony Kaye and director of the beautiful 'Hurt' video: Mark Romanek). Timberlake: working on his street credibility or an honest fan? With posthumous releases, there will always be the question whether it does the deceased justice. In this case you could question whether some artists in this video deserve to be associated with "the man in black". I'm not outspoken on this matter, because I don't think Johnny would mind. It's not a bad video either, though not half as good as the 'Hurt' video. Watch the video for 'God's gonna cut you down' below and decide for yourself.

I could talk about Johnny Cash some more, but I think it's better to finish this post with some recommendations for the people that like to find out more about this legend. The movie 'Walk the Line' was ok, but the documentary 'Johnny Cash - The Last Great American' gives a better picture of his life as a whole and it's done wonderfully. Realistically and respectfully done, with touching interviews with family members, friends and artists who worked with him, you will have a hard time keeping it dry in the end. Furthermore, his autobiography Cash is a terrific read!

I'm In Love (With Arthur Dove)

I once visited the renowned Guggenheim museum in New York together with my brother. As we were watching paintings by famous artist like 'what's his face' and 'that other guy' (namedropping isn't appropiate here, cause I'm not sure if I really saw paintings by Monet and Picasso...I suck) , I came to the following conclusion: this is not my thing. That's not to say I don't like art at all...I would love having something by Kurt Halsey (see image below) or Derek Hess, on my wall, but the importance (or essence if you will) of these paintings in the Guggenheim was lost on me. To me, if a painting looks good and/or brings out feelings, then it is a good painting. That's it, I don't care if it's abstract or modern or whatever.

It is therefore not surprising that I'd never heard about Arthur Dove (1880-1946), one of America's first abstract painters. Still, for a few weeks now I can't stop singing these six words: I'm in love with Arthur Dove. The reason for this is the irresistible equally titled song by the band Portastatic. The chorus in this song is so insanely catchy that it took me at least 10 listens before I noticed the rest of the song. It's a good indierocking song leaning somewhat to classic rock even(!), but the chorus...oh the chorus is so awesome! Actually, now that I think of it, the first couple of listens I just kept playing the singing harmony in the intro over and over again...like an addiction.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

Choosing a name for your band is a delicate manner which should not be taken lightly. A well chosen name can trigger curiosity while a less succesful choice can create aversion against your band before you're even listened to. I'm a sucker for good bandnames. When I came across a band called Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, I just had to check them out. Now, a good bandname does not always equal good music. In this case I have to say that I really like their name, but I love their music. Though this band is only their early twenties, they write indiepop gems like it's all they ever did.

Last month, a remastered version of their wonderful 2005 debut 'Broom' has been released. While the single 'Oregon Girl' (watch video below) scores high on the instant likeability factor, the other songs on this album are also really worthwhile. Sure...some people might find this kind of music boring, but that's probably because they're not paying enough attention to the craftmanship that is being shown in these songs. For example, listen to 'I am Warm & Powerful'. One minute into the song non believers will say : "This is boring, turn it off, let me listen to Mötley Crüe". Then at 1:15, a great hook kicks in and you say to this person: "Not bad eh?", to which the non believer will probably response by making a noise that could be interpreted as "Maybe". Okay, I'm not saying that everybody will like this, but there are so many hooks on this album, that it's definitely worth checking out!

Punk is dead?!...long live Latterman

I think I was 15 or 16 years old when I got into punk(rock) and hardcore. The raw energy and passion, the positive aggression, the obscurity, the melody and fastness of the music and the (do it yourself) mentality really spoke to me. Basically, these bands i fell in love with showed a lot of heart. For a lot of my favorite bands from that era the lyrics were just as important to me as the music. In my opinion, punk (and hardcore) should be about more than just music; it should be a counterculture. It should provide inspiration to young (and not so young) people to make a change in this world on an individual level. It's hard to name one band that stands out for me because it's the whole culture that was inspirational. It gave me the strength to make my own decisions instead of conforming to a certain standard. I'm not afraid to admit that I probably would still eat meat if it weren't for punkrock/hardcore to name an example.

These are still the things I look for in punkrock today and sadly, in my opinion, it is heart that is lacking in a lot of the more popular punkbands. Surprisingly, the bands that never used to be that outspoken on political, environmental and societal issues show the most heart (NOFX and Green Day are examples that first come to mind). Well, maybe I'm just getting old...but I'm losing touch with the 'scene'.

Every now and then however, you come across a band with the right spirit. When I heard Latterman's album 'No Matter Where We Go' last year it blew me away (listen to three songs from this album here). This band is't the most technical or original, but they play their music with such determination and passion that it's contagious. Add some inspirational lyrics and you've got a winner! The bands strong point is the vocalpart: it's hard not to sing along to these songs. The bands weak point might be the similarity of the songs. This is also the case for the new album '...We Are Still Alive'. Expect more of the same, which in one way is a dissappointment cause I was kind of curious what their next step would be. Sometimes however, it's nice to get more of what you already like.

I like to theorize about everything and everyone. For instance, when I went to college by bus everyday I'd theorize about the lives of all these familiar strangers that I saw every day. In my head I knew what their lives looked like, what music they liked and which television shows they watched. In my psychology study I've learned that this isn't that rare and actually is pretty well researched (read about the familiar stranger phenomenon here). Today however, I like to discuss a whole different theory and I encourage you to give your opinion. It goes a little something like this...

If the Beach Boys were still around in 2006 (in their mid twenties) they would sound like:

Option A) Field Music. This band plays delightful indiepop, with postrock drum rhythms and great vocal harmonies. The music is somewhat inoffensive so your parents might even like this, but that's also true for the original Beach Boys right? I wouldn't be surprised if this band will score a hit someday. Check the video for 'You're not supposed to' below and you'll see why! I'm totally digging this song.

Option B) Rooney. Alright. Take one part Weezer and one part Beach Boys and you will get Rooney. Named after the infamous principal of 80's hit movie "Ferris Bueller's day off", this band plays the kind of powerpop that stucks into your head after one listen. Their songs do get old after a couple of listens, but hey...you can't deny the fact that they were on 'the O.C'!

Option C) Annuals. A bit more experimental than option A and B, but it's a fact that the Beach Boys also had a more experimental side to them. Take a little bit of modern day indiepop/rock acts like Arcade Fire and Islands, put it in a blender together with the Beach Boys and you'll get something that closely resembles this band. This is the kind of music that you will have to listen a couple of times to 'to get it', but it's actually pretty good!

Show Review: Samiam/The Draft @ De Helling

Monday isn't the best night for a show...it's not as bad as lazy sunday evening shows, but still...it's monday... Though I was pretty excited to finally see one of the best poppunk bands around, this night might've just as well turned out to another dissappointing monday night show. Luckily I got my money's worth last night in Utrecht.

I haven't really listened to the debut album ('In a Million Pieces) of The Draft yet. With three members of the great Hot Water Music this is a band that definitely deserves more interest from my behalve. Last night they showed that there is life after HWM. They are blessed with one of the best singers in punkrock today, while musically I think they can be seen as a more accessible (not better though) version of HWM. They played a solid set and I'm listening to their album as we speak. However, singer Chris Wollard was so stoned that his between song speeches sounded more like the late Steve Irwin than anything else. I'm glad it didn't affect his singing voice (which really was great), but it was actually quite lame...

Up next: Samiam.
What I like about this band? They write good songs. There's no image. Just 5 guys playing good music and that's exactly what they did yesterday. Starting off with one of the best opening lines I've ever heard on a show ("Here's some songs we know") they came out strong, opening with some classic Samiam songs. They finished their set strong too and although some people might say that the middle part (with some new songs en some slower songs) was kind of dull...I loved every minute of it. This is the poppunk I love. Heartfelt, well written songs sung passionately by (again) a great vocalist. This band has the gift to make you sing along like these songs are a part of you.

Thus...a 'unmondaylike' show. Samiam's 'She found you' has been stuck in my head. Check out the video below.

"New" album Ben Folds

Tomorrow Ben Folds will release 'supersunnyspeedgraphic, the lp', which is "a comprehensive collection of original songs culled from his successful series of EP releases, b-sides, covers and film soundtrack appearances".
The album (amongst Ben Folds originals) contains his infamous and hilarious interpretation of Dr. Dre's hit 'Bitches ain't shit' (yeah it's true... lyrics like 'Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks lick on these nuts and suck the dick' on sweet pianopoprock) and covers of the Cure ('In Between Days') and the Darkness ('Get your hands off my woman'). My favorite song on the album so far is 'There is always someone cooler than you', which reminds me of the better songs from his Ben Folds Five era...good stuff!

Ok...the following scenario. There's this band. Their name sounds familiar and you're quite certain that you've checked some of their songs out, but you never really cared for this band. After reading some really positive reviews, you decide to check out this bands new album. The first listen is not enough to blow you away, but it touches some nerves. The singer has a voice that you either love or hate and you haven't decided yet which side your on. You do like the intensity, the energy and the music. Then you listen to the album again and there are a couple of songs that stand out. These are the songs that make you play this album over and over again and after a few listens you find other song that you love. All of a sudden...you 'get' this band and you can't wait to tell your friends about this band and you're excited because you find out that they're touring Europe in november.

Yeah...I'm talking about the Thermals and their new album 'The Body, The Blood, The Machine'. I am pretty certain that this album will make it to my yearlist. From the Subpop website: "The Body, The Blood, The Machine adds walls of guitars, organs, and even a few "ballads" (aka slightly pretty songs) to the mix, while still retaining the gritty post-pop-punk sound for which The Thermals are globally famous. The lyrics envision a United States governed by a fascist Christian state, and focus on the need (and means) to escape. While hardly a concept album, there is definitely a story told in the songs: a story about getting the fuck OUT while you still can."

* I'd already read that the new Killers album (Sam's Town) sounded a lot like Bruce Springsteen. I, however did not expected it to sound as much "bosslike" as on the first single "When we were young". Not that this is a bad thing. I actually really like this song!

* There are many reasons not to like George W Bush. Artist have shown different ways (from Fat Mike's punkvoter to Kanye West's "GWB doesn't care about black people") to ventilate their opinion about this wannabe president. Concerning GWB, there is so much to criticize that you sometimes get a feeling that you've heard it all before. You still hate that redneck president, but you don't really want to hear another band preaching about him on stage. This morning however, I saw a video by Jurassic 5, who have managed to put a lot of criticism in a quite funny video without being unoriginal. I didn't pay attention to the music, but great video!

Lately, there has been some controversy in the Netherlands concerning the mathematical abilities of future school teachers. Apparantly they have trouble adding, substracting and dividing without a calculator. Oh my...how will they teach our children?!! Fortunately there are bands who make doing math sound a little cooler. Take Math and Physics Club for instance. A geeky name, but they deliver simple but solid catchy indiepop in the vein of Belle and Sebastian. Their self titled debut LP (they've already released two EP's) will be released this month. I've already heard it and it's good!

An even geekier bandname is The Mathletes. With a more electronic driven sound -not unlike They Might Be Giants- they write silly yet simple tunes, with silly lyrics and silly song titles. 'It's a difficult thing, being a mule' for instance starts out with the following lines: "My Mom was a donkey, my dad was a horse, that makes me a mule...of course". Now...how's that for education? By the way...this video is weird!

Ramones for Kids?!!!

My 2 1/2 year old nephew is the coolest kid in the world. Already he loves to play (hit might be a better description) the drums en guitars that are set up in my bedroom. He always wants me to put on this kids cd with classic children's songs on it. Needless to say, these kids songs have gotten way beyond old. Actually...they were already old to begin with.

As i just found out, Go Kart Records have found the perfect solution for dads, moms, uncles and aunts with good musical taste who want the kid to listen to something that is more enjoyable for both parties. What is this solution? Brats On The Beat: Ramones For Kids, to be released in november. 'We've taken Ramones classic songs and "kiddified" them. Combined with an all-star group of singers, Brats On The Beat is guaranteed to have kids and adults smiling and dancing the night away', Go Kart explains.

The Pipettes@Rotown

Last night I went to the Pipettes show in a sold out Rotown. With the buzz that have been surrounding them for the past half year, I was quite curious to see if this retro/bubblegum/indie/popband lived up to the hype. I've enjoyed their debut album 'We Are The Pipettes' quite a bit, but I didn't know how I would feel about the choreographed dance moves and if the band would be a cool indiepopband or a lame-ass radio popband live. Thus, my expectations weren't that high.

Eventually, I guess it took me three songs to get it into it. From the moment they started "Your Kisses are Wasted on Me" throughout the end of the show, I had a smile on my face. I'd never expected them to be so much fun live. The three Pipettes were determined to give the crowd an enjoyable evening and they succeeded. The crowd went from headboppin' to handclaps to dancing. Well ok...only some people danced, but everyone seemed to have a great show.

Some other observations:
* the vocals were totally on key...these girls can really sing, great harmonies!
* the choreographed dancemoves were actually pretty awesome
* the backing band (the cassettes) stood anonymously behind the the three girls, but played flawless. The drummer's hairdo was actually even worse than mine.
* Rose Pipette might be the cutest girl in indiepop
* the Pipettes live are much more enjoyable than on album
* clap your hands if you want some more? We did!

So yeah...I had a pretty cool night in Rotterdam yesterday! There is only one problem...their songs have been stuck in my head all day now...

(The Tragedy of) Exploding Hearts

Sometimes you discover a band years after their break up and you wonder...how did a band THIS GOOD stay under my radar for all those years?! Exploding Hearts is the latest addition in a long line of (not so fashionably) late discoveries. Their 2003 album 'Guitar Romantic' is filled with songs the Beatles could have written if they only were a punkband: perfect popsongs brought with a punk attitude and lots of distorted guitars. This is the kind of music that sounds good the first time you hear it...the kind of music which makes you go up to the dj to ask him which band he's playing, because it's so freakin' AWESOME! I've put two songs up for download...it doesn't really matter which songs I've chosen, because actually every song on Guitar Romantic would have been good. Definitely one of my favorite albums!!!
Tragedy. When I discover a band I like, I like to find out more about them. I had already read that the band broke up after their first album, so I was hoping to find the members of Exploding Hearts branched out in other bands. It was then when I found out the band actually ended and how sad this story is... On July 20th, 2003, the band returned from a show in San Fransisco, where they were offered a record deal by Lookout! Records (previous home of The Donnas and Green Day). It was early morning, when their van veered out of control an flipped over twice, supposedly because the driver fell asleep. Sadly, three out of four members (only in their early twenties) died in the accident.

Now, I know rockstars die too (they only human, right?). Some musicians even become legends by dying. If they don't kill themselves a planecrash will do the trick. There is however one big difference between the death of icons like Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Cobain and the death of Exploding Hearts. This band was only at a start of a very promising career...destined to become the next big thing. Some bands don't know when it's time to quit...Exploding hearts never even had that choice.

Dirtnap Records just announced that the label will release "'Shattered', a 16-song collection of Hearts demos, singles, unreleased material, and alternate takes from the GR sessions, in CD format" on Halloween (Oct. 31st). Watch this in memoriam below. It features their song 'I'm A Pretender'.

Feel Good Music: Architecture in Helsinki

Australia's own pride and joy indiepopband Architecture in Helsinki consists of 8 members. That's right...8 members. I have a theory that the more members a band has, the more difficult it get to write songs...unless of course, there is one dictator in the band who makes all decisions. There are 8 different personalities with 8 different musical tastes. The songs of AIH however don't sound like a compromise. It's (indie)pop, rock, punk, electronica, dance...sometimes all at the same time. Some songs are cute, some songs are spasstic, some songs will make you want to dance, most songs will put a smile on your face and make you feel good. By the way, this is how they describe themselves: "A group of people with influences and tastes spanning the last 183 years of pop music, coupled with the isolation of Australia".

Curious? Check out the video's for "Do the Whirlwind" (one of the coolest animations I've seen in a video..you'll love this if you grew up playing videogames) and "It's 5" (a great bouncy track). I've also put the song "The Cemetary" up for download, because it's a great example of how diverse this band is!

If there was an award for most feminine hairmetal band, Poison probably would have won it. You only have to look at the cover of their 1986 debut album "Look What the Cat Dragged In" to see why. Poison is the kind of band you won't admit liking, although you can sing along to every song. Their bandname should have been 'Guilty Pleasure', cause that sums it all up. This is popmetal, with songs that are so sweet, it makes your teeth ache. Without hesitating I can name 10 reasons why this band sucked (or sucks, cause they're still around), but these reasons can't take away the fact that I still love playing their first two albums "Open Up and Say..Ahh!" and "Look What the Cat Dragged in". The band released so many singles, that it's hard to choose which video's to post here. I guess it doesn't really matter which one I post, because their video's all look pretty much the same. Pay attention to the drummer who's trying so hard to be cool, that it gets to the point where you can't decide whether you want to laugh or feel sorry for him. His motion behind the drumkit will at least raise an eyebrow here and then.

Sing me to Sleep, Joanna Newsom

There are styles of music that I mustn't play right before going to bed, because they activate my brain too much. It's at that time of the day that I play folk-ish, singer songwriter music (I am terrible in adding labels to an artist, just call it whatever you want). Johnny Cash and Sufjan Stevens are the most famous examples of good sleeping music at FTC HQ, but there are more and the best will probably will be discussed here eventually.

Recently, Joanna Newsom's new album Ys (scheduled for a release in november) has been a wonderful addition to my sleeping music playlist. The album has 5 songs on it..total playing time adds up to 55 minutes! I usually like my songs under 3 minutes, but Joanna's songs are like bedtime stories and her stories are so diverse, beautiful and creative that you're not even aware that the songs take 10 minutes or longer. The song I've posted (Emily) passes the 12 minute mark.

I could try and explain how the songs on Ys sound, but it's hard. Wikipedia actually has a pretty good description. "Her songwriting incorporates elements of indie pop, Appalachian music, avant-garde modernism, African harp rhythms and a sensibility that some listeners describe as quirky. Many are struck by Newsom's unusual voice, childish and weathered (at least one critic has compared it to Lisa Simpson's)."

I do believe she has a way of singing that you'll either love or hate. It's clear that I'm a lover, not a hater here. Did I mention she plays the harp? Oh my, don't let my punkrock/hardcore friends hear this!

Sometimes you just want to hear something that rocks hard, something to get you pumped up for a special occasion (a party, a match, an exam), sometimes you just want something you can play out loud to piss off your neighbours (I'm talking about you, not me here. I never fight with my neighbours...). When your in that mood, there is one band that will fulfill all your needs: Be Your Own Pet.

Put on their self titled debut album, turn up the volume, remove all dangerous object from your room and dance, scream, jump! This band rocks so hard. This album is filled with an amount of energy you rarely come across. What I like most about it though, is that from this album you get a feeling that this band isn't trying to be original or trying to write something the critics will love, they just wanna rock with loud music...and they succeed. I can't believe the average age in this band is only 18...then again, it might explain their raw, youthful sound. My favorite song is "Bicycle, Bicycle, you are my Bicycle, for which they just released an awesome video. The video for "Adventure" is also really worthwile/crazy.

The Mint Chicks

With the introduction of sites like MySpace and Purevolume, it seems that bands don't really put an effort into their regular websites anymore. Some new bands don't even make a website at all, which is a shame. Luckily, New Zealand's (!) The Mint Chicks are not one of those bands. With beautiful colorful and provocative artwork it provides eye candy in addition to information about the band you actually want to know.The well written biography teaches us that the quintet is into comic books, the Buzzcocks, a Clockwork Orange, Slayer ringtones, Refused, the Beach Boys and Grand Theft Auto. If that doesn't give you an idea what this band sounds like, their 2003 album 'Octagon, Octagon, Octagon' is described as "hardcore damaged beyond control by bubblegum, LSD and art school". Are you confused yet? On their latest album Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! the Mint Chicks "hone their disjointed noisy assault into an album of shiny pop anthems". What to expect? An album where:
* every song sounds completely different
* harcore, punk, pop and rock are put in a blender with excellent results
* weirdness doesn't neccesarily mean that it's unaccessible...in fact, this is some very catchy and accessible stuff!!
* the title track Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! might as well turn out to be their breakout song. It's a great tune but the drum riff makes it awesome.

The 101

Putting labels on music is always difficult. For instance, the term poppunk can be used to describe bands with a very thick production and instantly contagious songs, but with low staying power (think Fall Out Boy). Poppunk can also be used to describe bands that write excellent head boppin', rockin' pop songs with a punk feel to them that sound great no matter how many times you play these songs. Bands like Samiam and All are good examples. The 101 from NYC are a nice addition to this group.

Formed by singer Eric Richter (formerly of emo legends Christie Front Drive), the band recently released their 2nd full length album (Numbers). Keywords? Melody, hooks and most importantly plain good songwriting! This band is probably not fashionable enough to become popular with the kids, but I know there are lots of persons out there who will eat this up! If you're into bands like Samiam, Jawbreaker, Hey Mercedes, All and (the fast songs by) Jimmy Eat World, this band is for you! Check out 'Never In' (from the first album Green Street) and 'Dancing' from the new album. You can also download their complete (!) debut EP here.

Oh my! What a week. The last days I've been so busy, that I did not find the time to post on this blog. Let's see...wednesday was filled with graduating, thursday with aging (I'm 26 now)...and to top all that: today I worked from 8am to 6pm! I see you stare in disbelieve; I guess you're gonna have to take my word for it.

This last minute post to the 'Finally Friday video' series is done with the sleep already haunting my eyes. I'm too tired for a party song, so it's a good day for a powerballad. Every self respecting (Hair) Metal/Hard Rock band had at least one powerballad on their albums. Guns n' Roses had 'Patience', Europe had 'Carrie', Aerosmith had 'Janies got a Gun' and Poison had 'Every Rose has its Thorn'. Still, my favorite powerballad has to be '18 and life' by Skid Row. I remember staying at my brother's place in my early teens. watching MTV in the morning, which was kind of magical because we never had cable television at home. I already knew the song (thanks to that same brother), but I still remember seeing that video. Singer Sebastian Bach was besides a very charismatic frontman one of the best vocalists in metal. I guess that really appealed to me in that period, but they were definitely not a one hit wonder to me. Their Self Titled album and Slave to the Grind are still one of my favorite albums of that era. Skid Row were seen as the next Guns n' Roses but they never became that big, but that doesn't matter. At least Sebastian Bach can claim a succesful acting career in the tv show Gilmore Girls. Eat that Axl Rose!!!

Graduation Day

Is graduation day supposed to feel like having a dental appointment? Today I become a Master of Science. Four years of studying succesfully that went by too fast and now I'm thrown into an uncertain future. What will become of me? All these question from people which are meant well, but just add pressure to uncertainty. Then again...change is a good thing. When you get too comfortable in a certain place, you lose your edge and sharpness. We can't have that! Discovering new surroundings, learning new things...these are actually good things. Let's see what the future brings!

Clinton vs Fox news

So how about that Fox news interview with former US president Clinton? I was trying to find it yesterday on youtube, because I wanted to see the whole interview. For some reason, a lot of video's were removed because of copyright issues (I'm actually wondering how long the clips in this post will stay online). This is kind of curious because you can find lots of other FOX news clips on youtube. Censorship is a bitch... Today however, I found the interview. You can skip, the first four minutes of the first part of the interview, but then it gets interesting. Clinton explains in clear and passionate words what he has done to fight terrorism and Osama Bin Laden in particular. He states some interesting facts and even admits that he made mistakes. While he's at it, he also stands up to FOX news' right wing conservative approach and their dubious practices (the documentary Outfoxed is recommended if you want to find out more about this!). Basically Clinton slaps interviewer Wallace and FOX news around with facts and passion and wins by K.O. Watch the interview yourself:

How did FOX news reacted to this knock out loss? In typical Fox news way...by spinning...watch the clip below. Instead of discussing or even mentioning what he said, they focus on how he said it, diverting the attention of the strong points Clinton made.

The sad thing is that other news stations also focus on Clinton going berserk instead of focusing on the words spoken. Because of this, Clintons important message seems to miss its mark. Thank God for objective journalism...

...to end on a more humorous note. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart recently had a hilarious item on the use of question marks by news stations.

Five O'Clock Heroes

When a band cites Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and The Jam as their main influences they have my attention. Five O'Clock Heroes is certainly influenced by these bands, but they succeed (where others failed, Kaiser Chiefs for instance, but some might disagree) in taking these influences and creating a sound of their own. Their debut album Bend to Breaks, which was released this spring is filled with solid postpunk/poprock songs with some standout tracks on it. Time On My Hands (see video), with an awesome bassline and a great chorus (The Jam would be proud), might be the bands best shot to stardom, but there are more songs on it that could do well as a single. White Girls (video) and Head Games (video) were also released as a single.

Don't expect anything revolutionary or original, but that's no problem when it's done this good.

If I can't dance to it...

...it's not my revolution. Although there has been some controversy whether famous anarchist/feminist Emma Goldman has truly spoken these words, I start this post with this quote because I believe The Format has made their stellar summer album Dog Problems with the motto: If I can't dance to it, it's not my heartbreak!

The first time I listened to this album, without paying attention to the lyrics, I'd never guessed it's a concept record about heartbreak for the simple reason that the songs make you feel good. Hell, they even make you wanna dance, even when you're not really into that kinda stuff. Without a doubt, Dog Problems has been my summer album of 2006. From the Beach Boys like opening harmony in "Time Bomb", to irresistable sing along choruses in songs like "Oceans" and "Inches and Failing", from the kind of weird, but still very enjoyable title track to the unexpected punkrock outburst in "If Work Permits"...there's much to like about Dog Problems. As a first video from the album they chose the song The Compromise. I'm surprised by this, because it's one of my least favorite songs on the album. The video however can be described with one word: Origami!

How about the album title? Singer Nate Ruess explains: "It was that thing where instead of having a baby to fix our relationship, we'd always get a dog, so by the time she left for good, I had three dogs". Ouch!

Finally Friday Video's Part II

Finally...it's friday again! Time for another installment in the 'finally friday video' series. Today's artist: Cinderella. This band was discovered in the mid 80's by some famous dude called Jon Bon Jovi. The album "Night Songs" was released in '86 after which the band played as an opening act at Bon Jovi's "Slipperly when Wet" tour.

From their debut album comes the instant classic "Shake Me". The video is everything a Hairmetal video should be: a cheesy acted introductive piece, the band playing "live" with hot girls in the front row of the audience and bandmembers that do not look unlike those women.

Anyways, this song rocks! Play it loud mutha and have a great weekend!

Although the joke's wearing thinner and thinner with every album, I still get pretty excited what (everyone's favorite karaoke band?) Me First And The Gimme Gimmes will do as a next theme record. This time, they chose to do country songs and the new album will be released october, 17th.
